To: EBI members
Dear Colleagues,
We are delighted to inform you that jointly with our member ADAC, EBI yesterday organised the first-ever breakfast debate on water-based tourism in the European Parliament hosted by MEP Nikolina Brnjac. The topic was “EU Water-Based Tourism on the Rise: Developing the EU Policy Framework” and brought together policymakers, industry representatives, and consumer organisations to discuss how the EU can strengthen sustainable water-based tourism.
Some key take-aways from a very successful event:
- Water-based tourism, from marinas to charter and boating, is recognised as a cornerstone of Europe’s tourism ecosystem. Participants underscored the need for stronger EU support, investment, and harmonised frameworks through the upcoming EU Tourism Strategy and Industrial Maritime Strategy.
- The event featured speeches from MEP Nikolina Brnjac, Andreea Staicu (Head of Tourism Sector, European Commission) and saw the participation of a total of 7 MEPs across political groups and countries, actively engaged in the discussion. Several other MEP offices were represented in the meeting at staff level, as well as other parts of the EU Commission and important stakeholder organisations.
- Speaking for ADAC and EBI were Karlheinz Jungbeck (Tourism President, ADAC), Robert Marx (President, EBI) and Marc Diening (CEO, PPF Nautical) emphasising jointly the need to develop a strong European Tourism Strategy that priorities water-based tourism. A two-pager of the main common points of consumer and industry was presented and provided as take-away for all participants (see attached).
Attached you will find the press release on the event, as well as several pictures that can be used for external communication (© Thomas Blairon). We very much thank our colleagues at ADAC for the excellent cooperation and joint delivery of a very successful event in the European Parliament that will advance many of our key issues. In particular many thanks to Claudia May, Steffen Haebich, Beatrice Graupner and led by Karlheinz Jugbeck.
The event came one day after a packed Public Affairs Day, in which EBI members came to Brussels for meetings with MEPs and national government representatives from their countries. This was the third of its kind since the EU elections last year and was again a great format to tighten relationships with key policymakers for our sector. Thank you very much to Ana Calic (CEA – Nautical Sector Association), Jeroen van den Heuvel (HISWA-RECRON) and Olivier Bougan (FIN) for coming to Brussels and leading these important meetings with our counterparts!
Please do not hesitate to let us know if you have any further questions.
Best regards,
Philip
